Celebrating International Literacy Day – 8 September

This year’s International Literacy Day will be celebrated under the theme Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies.

International Literacy Day is an important reminder of global as well as our own literacy challenges. UNESCO estimates “that at least 763 million young people and adults were lacking basic literacy skills in 2020”. More information is on the UNESCO site.

This year, the Hotline will be celebrating International Literacy Day at the Australian Council for Adult Literacy conference in Adelaide taking part in workshops with literacy specialists from across Australia.
