NSW VET Review – have your say about LND

The NSW government is reviewing the vocational education and training sector (see review page). It is now in the consultation phase and “is focused on identifying the strengths, gaps and opportunities for improvement in skills development and training, to support our students and workforce ” and “is a NSW Government commitment to restore TAFE to be the best it can, and re-skill NSW”.  The Review has released a discussion paper and is holding roundtable discussions and digital forums. The Hotline recently participated in a roundtable discussion focussed on accessibility of VET training. A topic we know very well in our daily work, assisting adults to overcome multiple barriers in place so they can access literacy and numeracy classes.

Page 8 of the discussion paper notes the literacy hurdles faced by students in participating in and completing VET studies. Discussion questions ask:

  • What are the existing strategies that are working well to support participation, completion and pathways to employment of students from diverse backgrounds?
  • What new strategies could be implemented?
  • And how can VET student support services change to increase participation and achieve better outcomes for diverse cohorts?
