In recent months the Hotline has had quite a few calls from truck drivers around the country who are having trouble completing the compulsory Work Diary. The diary was designed to reduce driver fatigue by ensuring drivers take proper rest breaks, but it’s proving to be a challenge for some drivers who don’t feel confident with their reading, writing and maths. Several drivers reported being fined because they weren’t able to fill it in properly.
The Hotline took the initiative and contacted the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator, which administers the Work Diary. As a result, we’re now in very productive discussions about ways to make the diary less challenging, including options for redesigning the diary and simplifying its layout, and adapting the instructions. We’re also able to let drivers know about the exemption available, which allows drivers to keep temporary records in alternative forms (such as photos).
